Factual Storytelling (P3901)
15 credits, Level 5
Autumn teaching
On this module, you’ll explore core skills of factual film production: from creative documentary to multi-platform video. You’ll learn how to conceive, develop, script, finance, shoot, edit, mix, grade, promote and distribute a short documentary film, or, a multi-platform video, in a professional manner.
You’ll research and develop a story involving real-world participants, exploring ideas such as:
- representation
- narrative
- voice
- advocacy
- impact.
Using professional equipment and in-house facilities, you’ll acquire industry-level skills in:
- pre-production
- production
- post-production.
You’ll also gain essential funding and distribution insights for your own future productions.
Documentary depends on the strength of its visual storytelling, on conveying emotions, information and ideas through the imaginative combination of image, sound and speech.
The module comprises:
- workshops involving conceptual discussions and critical readings
- practice sessions with technical tuition and studio work
- technical demonstrations on professional equipment and software you’ll use.
