Engaging Audiences: Creative Heritage and Creative Technologies
This episode of the Digital Methods Accelerator is a bit special. It’s all about working with non-academic partners, especially cultural heritage partners - galleries, museums, archives, libraries and more. We’ll hear from several mystery guests about their projects, offering concrete examples of how research, collections, and creative practice can be brought into dialogue with diverse audiences. What is a ‘research output,’ and how does knowledge embed in more creative and imaginative forms? Is it really actually always ‘knowledge’ that we’re ‘producing,’ or might we sometimes be doing other valuable things? How can digital technologies be used creatively in these contexts? When might analogue, low-tech, or post-digital approaches be more appropriate or exciting?
We’ll also have a little time to reflect on the current state of the funding landscape for arts and cultural heritage. Things are tough out there! Should media, arts and humanities researchers content ourselves with traditional funding sources, or be looking more widely? How can researchers and cultural organisations engage productively with more STEM-style funding without losing sight of our values, identities, and distinctive ways of working?
Together will explore different models of collaboration with heritage institutions, creative approaches to working with collections, and practical ways of communicating research beyond the academy. The session will be particularly relevant for ECRs trying to get their heads around the realities of research, in collaboration with non-academic partners, as well as veteran researchers who want to think strategically and creatively about public-facing work in heritage and the creative industries. We also very much welcome colleagues from research offices across the university.
