On Friday 25 May 2018 Ireland voted to decisively repeal article 40.3.3 inserted into the Irish constitution by its Eighth Amendment, which was among the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe. Access to abortion care has been virtually impossible for women in Ireland, and has forced women to seek abortion care abroad, risk a fourteen year prison sentence by procuring a medical abortion without medical supervision, and has infringed human rights and lead to preventable mortalities (such as the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar, pictured above).
We congratulate our CORTH members Dr Sheelagh McGuinness (Bristol Law School), Dr Ruth Fletcher (Queen Mary School of Law), Professor Sally Sheldon (Kent Law School) and Professor Bobbie Farsides (Brighton & Βι¶ΉΣ³» Medical School) for generously investing their expertise, energy and time in the campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment.
