Research Foundations (828C1)
15 credits, Level 7 (Masters)
Autumn teaching
On this module, you’ll engage with literature to form a deep and objective research topic. You’ll use tools to identify key themes, methods and knowledge gaps, including:
- guided reading
- analysis
- synthesis of peer-reviewed sources.
You’ll receive support from a supervisor to prepare for data collection, covering:
- research planning
- risk assessments
- ethical approvals
- identifying necessary training or logistical arrangements.
By the end of the module, you’ll have the academic and practical skills that you need to undertake independent research.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 40 hours of contact time and about 260 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26.
