Space, Place and Screen Media (895P4)

30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Spring teaching

How does the moving image engage with different types of space and place? You’ll cover different contexts, from global cities to rural landscapes, and iconic architecture to domestic interiors.

On this module, you’ll explore the ‘spatial turn’ in film and media studies. You’ll investigate:

  • cinema and screen media through different space and place theories – including mapping, architecture and landscape
  • the relationship between space, place and identity on- and off-screen
  • the geographies of media production, engaging with topics such as:
    • globalisation
    • gentrification
    • ecocriticism
    • the ‘smart city’
    • the ‘right to the city’
  • a range of films, television series and digital screen media
  • how viewing is shifting from the movie theatre to the portable screen.

You’ll use different disciplines to draw readings, including:

  • film studies
  • media studies
  • geography
  • architecture
  • visual culture.
