Module Outline
The Masters Tropical Forest Science field trip module is based at the Santa Lucia Cloud forest Reserve in NW Ecuador. The field station and laboratory were established by the Â鶹ӳ» to provide the opportunity for students to gain expertise in tropical plant, invertebrate and vertebrate taxonomy. Following an introduction to the wildlife and plants of the region the students undertake their own fieldwork project to address a conservation issue at this biodiversity hotspot.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate a systematic knowledge and understanding of rainforest flora and fauna, their habitat requirements, the major pressures they face, and appropriate conservation initiatives
Identify key plant families, invertebrates, mammals and birds typical of the Ecuadorean Andes
Design and safely execute a research project investigating an aspect of rainforest ecology, dealing with complex issues systematically and creatively
Research and synthesise the primary literature to identify novel research questions and build a coherent research proposal
