Module Outline

This module requires students to carry out an independent, original, in-depth research project in consultation with a research supervisor on a specialised topic in biology, ecology or zoology. It will involve bespoke, project-specific training in practical skills, the generation of hypotheses, the production of data, statistical analysis and interpretation of results, and the presentation of results in a research seminar and a dissertation written in the form of a scientific paper.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate a comprehensive and conceptual understanding of advanced scholarship and research techniques relevant to a research project.

Be able to plan, execute and present an independent piece of project work on a specialised topic in biology, ecology or zoology, demonstrating originality and competence in practical research techniques, and dealing with complex issues systematically and creatively.

Demonstrate oral and written communications skills needed to write a scientific paper and to present findings in a research seminar

Demonstrate the ability to learn independently from experience to develop skills and understanding, act autonomously in planning and implementing research tasks, and use self-direction and originality to solve research problems.
