Module 842C1

Module details for 2026/27.

45 credits

FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)

Module Outline

This module is the first of two core project modules that collectively support students in undertaking an independent, original, and in depth research project in consultation with a research supervisor, focusing on a specialised topic in animal behaviour or conservation biology. In Part 1, students will develop their project direction, receive bespoke project specific training and support, and build the practical foundations required for successful research. Activities will include formulating research questions and hypotheses, designing methodologies, and, where appropriate, conducting preliminary data collection or pilot work and undertaking initial data handling or exploratory analysis.
Students will demonstrate their developing understanding and preparedness through the submission of a project proposal report. This report will comprise a critical literature review, an introduction establishing the research context, and a detailed proposed methodology, forming the academic and practical groundwork for the full implementation of the research project in Part 2. The module provides the essential preparation and skills development required for progressing to the completion of the independent research project in the second project module.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate a systematic understanding of a specialised topic in animal behaviour or conservation biology, and the ability to access, critically evaluate, and synthesise primary literature and experimental data.

Plan, execute and present an independent piece of project work on a specialised topic in animal behaviour, conservation biology or evolutionary biology, demonstrating originality, competence in practical research techniques, problem solving and autonomy.

Demonstrate communications skills needed to write a scientific paper and to present findings.

Demonstrate the ability to learn independently from experience to develop skills and understanding.
