Smart Interactive Systems (H7128)
Smart Interactive Systems
Module H7128
Module details for 2018/19.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 6
Module Outline
This is a mostly simulation and lab based module. The goal is to realize a mixed signals system to gain knowledge of the industrial design, and fabrication process. The project (e.g. smart agricultural watering system, wireless data link, DAB radio), will be made from 5-6 sub components focusing on one of the following topics:
• Sensors
• Micro controllers / FPGA
• Power supply
• ADC / DAC
• Visual / audible output devices
• Amplifiers
• Communication links
• Mobile computing / programming / Android
Every two weeks a new sub system (relevant for the chosen project) has to be designed and built using a pool of predefined components. In the end, the performance of the complete system has to be evaluated.

Module learning outcomes
Critically evaluate the performance of commercial electronic devices, and to select devices able to solve a task in the most efficient way.
Explain the interaction between the digital and analogue parts of a mixed signals system.
Apply the digital / analogue / programming skills acquired in other modules, and to design an integrated system following industrial procedures.
Characterise the performance of a system considering its electrical performance, complexity, scalability of the manufacturing process and the budget.
